What Is Scentra?

The Alen Scentra is a scent diffuser designed specifically to work with Alen air purifiers. Unlike candles, plug-ins, or traditional essential oil diffusers, Scentra disperses scent through purified air as it flows out of the air purifier with each scent formulated to help create a functional, mood-boosting effect.

The Scentra starter kit includes a small diffuser that attaches directly to a compatible Alen air purifier and scent cartridges. The starter kit currently comes with two scents: Rest and Focus, which are designed to create a more relaxing or more energizing environment, depending on which scent you use. 

Scentra is not a perfume and not meant to simply cover up odors. Instead, Scentra is designed to enhance purified air to help support your mood throughout the day. This distinction is important. Scentra adds scent after the air has been cleaned, which creates a very different experience. The scents, which are free of harmful additives, are typically lighter, more subtle, and more integrated into the room rather than concentrated in one spot.

What makes Scentra particularly interesting, though, is that the scents were not just created to smell good, they were designed around how scent affects the brain.

The Science Behind Scent (And Why It Can Change How You Feel)

To understand Scentra, it helps to start not with what it smells like, but with how it feels.

Scentra is built around the idea of functional scent, meaning the scent is designed to influence how you feel in a space, not just to make a room smell good. Unlike traditional home fragrance products that are meant to add a noticeable fragrance to a room and cover up mal odors, Scentra is designed to work in combination with air purification, subtly enhancing the environment created by clean air. Alen describes this as “elevating your air,” rather than fragrancing a room.

What makes Scentra different from typical home fragrance products is that the scents were developed using neuroscience research and brain imaging to measure how people emotionally respond to different scent compositions in real time. This research is based on more than 35 years of neuroscience and sensory research focused on understanding how scent influences mood and emotional state.

Researchers use tools like EEG brain imaging and visual-based testing methods to monitor emotional responses to scent. These methods measure how the brain responds while a person experiences a scent, and they capture emotional associations using imagery and visuals rather than words. This allows researchers to measure emotional responses more intuitively and sensitively than traditional fragrance testing.

Over time, these techniques have been used to test fragrances with thousands of participants, generating millions of data points linking specific scent compositions to emotional responses like calmness, focus, and relaxation. Using this research, scent formulations can be designed to evoke specific emotional responses, rather than just creating a pleasant smell.

Another important part of Scentra is that the formulas are designed to be clean, meaning they are free from certain additives commonly found in fragrance products, including phthalates, parabens, eugenol, and formaldehyde. The formulas are also CARB Prop 65 compliant and Leaping Bunny certified, which reflects additional testing and ingredient standards.

The key idea behind Scentra is that scent should not overpower a room or mask odors. Instead, when combined with purified air, scent can be used as a subtle environmental tool to influence how a space feels, whether that’s more relaxing, more focused, or simply more comfortable to spend time in.

The Scentra Scents

Before diving into my testing process, I want to highlight that each Scentra scent is designed with a specific purpose in mind, not just to smell pleasant, but to influence how a space feels when combined with clean air. Let’s get into each scent.

The Functional Scent Categories

Scentra is built around five functional scent categories, each designed to support a different mood or environment:

• Rest
• Renew
• Focus
• Balance
• Root

At the time of testing, the starter kit includes Rest and Focus, with other scents planned for release later.

What Comes in the Scentra Starter Kit

The Scentra starter kit includes everything you need to get started: the Scentra diffuser, two scent cartridges, and setup instructions accessible through a QR code on the packaging.

The Scentra diffuser itself is a small attachment that connects directly to Alen air purifiers. Scentra uses the airflow from the purifier to disperse scent throughout the room. As the purifier pushes out clean air, that air passes through the scent cartridge and carries a light fragrance into the space.

The starter kit includes two scents:

• Rest, which is designed to create a more calming, relaxing environment
• Focus, which is designed to promote alertness and concentration

One feature that stands out is that the diffuser has adjustable scent strength, allowing you to control how noticeable the scent is. This is important because scent preference is very personal, some people want a very subtle background scent, while others want something more noticeable. The ability to adjust the intensity makes the system more customizable than many plug-ins or candles, which typically have a fixed strength.

The diffuser attaches directly to the purifier in a designated slot, and the scent cartridge inserts into the diffuser. Once installed, the scent disperses automatically whenever the purifier is running.

Testing Overview and Goals

To evaluate how Scentra performs in real-world conditions, I tested each scent over multiple days, using different purifier models and fan speeds. Because Scentra works by dispersing scent through the airflow of the purifier, factors like room size, purifier model, and fan speed can all influence how noticeable the scent is and how quickly it spreads.

To keep the testing consistent, I tested one scent at a time so that the scents would not compete or mix. Before evaluating each scent, I allowed the purifier to run with the scent cartridge installed for 24 hours to allow the scent to fully disperse into the room and reach a steady level. After that initial period, I evaluated each scent over 3-4 days of normal daily use.

Purifiers Used for Testing

I tested Scentra using two Alen air purifier models:

• Alen 25i: Rest scent in my bedroom
• Alen 35i: Focus scent in my living room

Each scent was tested on both purifiers to see how purifier airflow affected scent strength and how quickly the scent became noticeable.

Setup & Ease of Use

One of the biggest questions with any new product is how easy it is to set up, especially for someone who may not be very comfortable with new technology. Overall, the Scentra setup process was very straightforward and took only a few minutes from opening the box to having it running.

The instructions are accessed by scanning a QR code on the packaging. If you’re not familiar with QR codes, the process is simple: open the camera on your phone, point it at the QR code, and tap the link that appears on the screen. This takes you directly to a setup video that walks through the process. While the video instructions were clear, it would’ve been nice to have written instructions that matched the visual included with the product.

The physical setup itself was simple:

1. Take off the Scentra diffuser lid and insert the scent cartridge into the diffuser
2. Attach the diffuser to the purifier but pulling the tongs down from the bottom of the diffuser 
3. Turn the purifier on Auto Mode
4. Adjust the scent strength to your preference using the slider on the diffuser

From start to finish, the setup took approximately 2-3 minutes and did not require any tools or complicated steps. The diffuser clicks into place, and the cartridge is designed to only fit one way, which makes the process very intuitive.

Scent intensity is controlled by opening or closing the scent dispenser on the cartridge. Opening it increases intensity, and closing it decreases intensity. Importantly, Alen recommends not lowering the purifier fan speed to reduce scent, because doing so may reduce the effectiveness of air purification. Instead, scent strength should be adjusted using the cartridge itself.

A helpful way to evaluate usability is to ask whether someone who is not particularly tech-savvy could set this up. In this case, the answer is likely yes. Because the setup relies mostly on physically inserting the cartridge and attaching the diffuser, and the QR code links directly to a video showing exactly what to do, most people should be able to get it running without much difficulty. 

Rest Scent Testing Results: Bedroom, Alen 25i

For the Rest scent, I tested Scentra in my bedroom using the Alen 25i, which is designed for smaller spaces. My bedroom is approximately 100-200 square feet, which is well within the recommended range for Scentra (up to ~800 square feet), making it a good environment to evaluate how the scent performs in a typical bedroom setting.

How Long It Took to Notice the Scent

With the scent cartridge fully open and the purifier running, the scent became noticeable in about 15 minutes. After about 30 minutes, the scent had spread throughout the room and was clearly noticeable, so I adjusted the scent cartridge from fully open to about half open to reduce the intensity.

Once adjusted, the scent remained noticeable but not overpowering, and it continued to disperse evenly throughout the room.

How Strong the Scent Was on Different Diffuser Levels

At the fully open setting, the scent was fairly strong for a bedroom-sized space. After reducing the cartridge opening to about halfway, the scent felt more balanced and appropriate for sleeping. One thing I noticed over time was that the scent began to feel less strong after a while, which may have been because the room reached a steady scent level or because I simply got used to the smell.

Importantly, the scent filled the entire room rather than staying concentrated near the purifier, which made the scent feel more like part of the environment rather than a localized fragrance source.

What the Rest Scent Smelled Like

The Rest scent is described as lavender, sage, and vanilla, and the lavender note was the most noticeable. Overall, the scent smelled like a lavender-forward, relaxing scent. When adjusted to a lower setting it became much more subtle and appropriate for a bedroom.

Did I Sleep Better?

Short answer, yes! After sleeping with the Rest scent running overnight, the scent was much less noticeable in the morning, which may have been because I got used to the scent over time rather than the scent disappearing completely. 

During the testing period, both my partner and I agreed that we were sleeping better. By the fourth night of testing, my partner’s sleep tracker showed a sleep score of 95, which was higher than usual. While this is obviously not a controlled experiment and many factors affect sleep, it was interesting to see while testing a scent designed for a sleep environment.

Overall, the Rest scent worked well. The key was adjusting the intensity, fully open was too strong for a small bedroom, but half open felt balanced and filled the room with a noticeable but not overwhelming scent. I genuinely enjoyed this scent and felt like I fell asleep quicker and slept better each night I used it.

Focus Scent Testing Results: Living Room & Office, Alen 35i

For the Focus scent, I initially tested Scentra in a living room using the Alen 35i, which is designed for larger spaces. The living room is approximately 600 square feet, which is within the recommended range for Scentra (up to ~800 square feet), making it a good environment to evaluate how the scent performs in a larger, open space.

However, after the first full day of testing, I moved the purifier into a home office to better evaluate how the scent performs in a more enclosed, work-focused environment.

How Long It Took to Notice the Scent

With the scent cartridge fully open and the purifier running in the living room, the scent remained fairly subtle in this space. We often keep windows open in the living room and have frequent airflow from people moving in and out of the space. Because Scentra disperses scent through the purifier’s airflow, additional ventilation seemed to dilute the scent and make it less noticeable.

After moving the purifier into the office, the scent became more noticeable, likely due to the smaller, more enclosed environment. 

Even across different purifier settings (low, high, turbo, and auto), I did not notice a significant change in scent strength.

How Strong the Scent Was on Different Diffuser Levels and Purifier Levels

For this test, I primarily used the fully open setting since the living room is significantly larger than the bedroom used for the Rest test.

In the living room, even at the fully open setting, the scent felt fairly subtle, likely due to the airflow and open windows. In the office, the scent felt more balanced and noticeable, while still remaining light and not overpowering.

What the Focus Scent Smelled Like

The Focus scent is described as green tea, bergamot, and lime. To me, the scent smelled refreshing, clean, and bright. It felt more like a subtle, clean-air scent rather than a strong fragrance, and definitely leaned more toward a daytime scent.

Did It Help Me Feel More Focused?

This is harder to measure than sleep, but while testing the Focus scent, my partner, who works from home about 50% of the time, spent several days working in the office with the scent running.

Overall, he noticed a clean, pleasant scent, but did not report a significant change in focus or productivity. Similarly, during my own use, the scent created a nice, refreshing environment, but did not have a clearly noticeable effect on performance or concentration.

Compared to the Rest scent, which had a more noticeable impact on the overall sleep environment, the effects of the Focus scent felt more subtle and less immediately noticeable.

Overall Impression of Focus

Overall, the Focus scent is a light, refreshing scent that works better in more enclosed spaces like an office than in larger, open areas with airflow. In the living room, the scent was quite subtle even at full intensity, but in the office it became more noticeable and felt appropriately balanced.

While the scent was pleasant and well-suited for daytime use, its functional benefits felt more subtle compared to the Rest scent. It may be best for people who prefer a very light, clean scent rather than something strong or highly noticeable.

Warranty & Returns

One unique part of the Scentra program is the Scent Guarantee. If you try a scent and decide you don’t like it, Alen allows you to exchange it for a different scent within 30 days of delivery. This is helpful because scent preference is very personal, and it can be hard to know whether you’ll like a scent until you try it in your own home.

Scent replacements are limited to one exchange per customer, and customers must contact Alen through their returns form to request the exchange.

30-Day Limited Warranty (Defective Products)

If the diffuser arrives damaged or defective, Alen will accept the return and provide a replacement within the first 30 days.

Diffuser Warranty

The Scentra diffuser comes with a one-year warranty from the original purchase date. This warranty covers: manufacturing defects and products damaged during shipping.

The warranty does not cover: lost or misplaced parts, accidental damage, damage from improper use, or products purchased from unauthorized sellers.

If the diffuser needs to be replaced under warranty, the original diffuser must be returned to Alen before a replacement is issued. Replacement diffusers are typically provided as part of a replacement starter kit. An important detail is that if you maintain an active scent subscription, the diffuser warranty is extended for the duration of the subscription, which adds additional long-term protection.
