Our Veredict

This is a great option for superior-cleaning or medical-grade environments, and for those who may suffer from severe allergies and asthma. But this may be overkill for the average user. It is a bit of a heavyweight, coming in at 47 lbs, but the wheels make it easier to position in the room.

The Austin Air Purifier HealthMate Plus (Superblend) Air Purifier is effective for asthma and allergy sufferers and helps provide relief for MCS sufferers. To absorb a broad range of volatile organic chemicals, the engineers at Austin Air added potassium iodide (KI) to the mix of activated carbon-zeolite. This is in addition to the HEPA filter and standard low-cost pre-filter. The Plus model even absorbs chemically reactive gases like formaldehyde and ammonia, which is especially helpful when you have a new home or new furniture, upholstery, or carpeting. With a high-efficiency fan rated at 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM) the HealthMate Plus (Superblend) HEPA units have the capability to clear the chemicals, pollen, odor, and particulates from a large room. The manufacturer rates the air purifiers for rooms as large as 1,500 square feet.

Filtration Process

The Healthmate Plus has a 360-degree air intake that then moves the air through the 4-stage filtration process.

The Large Particle Pre-filter removes particles easily seen by the naked eye (e.g. dust, hair and pet dander). The Medium Particle Pre-filter removes small to medium size particles (e.g. molds, spores and pollen). Next, it moves the air over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon, Potassium Iodide Impregnated Carbon and Zeolite which helps remove Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals, gases and odors. The last stage is the True Medical Grade HEPA which removes 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 99% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns. The Healthmate Plus is a system equipped with the PERMA FILTER pre-filter and HEPA filter. The system also contains nearly 15 pounds of a chemical compound mixture. This mixture includes activated carbon and zeolite. The compound is also impregnated with potassium iodide. This chemical is known for its ability to absorb odors and chemical fumes from air and trap them. Once the air has been through the filtering system, the particles and contaminants are eliminated. The air is then passed through the chemical compound and the odors and fumes are eliminated.

Once the air has been through the entire system including the chemical compound, it is released into the room. The air is free and clean and can be breathed in without irritation. The compound mixture in these air purifiers is designed to specifically absorb and destroy all odors and fumes that may be present in the air. The effective chemicals that are present in the Austin Air Healthmate Plus make it able to release safe and healthy air into a room for circulation.

“I was diagnosed with multiple chemical sensitivity about a year ago and since then have tried a number of HEPA units that I bought locally at Lowe’s and Sears. Each claimed to absorb chemicals. I banished perfumes and heavily scented cleaners from my home and ran the units nonstop but was still having difficulty. Fortunately, in a chat room for people suffering from MCS I found that the higher quality Austin Air air purifiers are often not available in stores so I surfed the web and landed on your site at airpurifiers.com. It was easy to use and I became so hopeful when I read about the Austin Air HealthMate Plus. I ordered it immediately and was shocked when it arrived in two days. It has been the answer to a prayer. I don’t know if it was formaldehyde or something else that was bothering me but whatever it was the Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier is eliminating it and I feel MUCH better! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Coverage and Real-World Use

Austin Air rates the HealthMate Plus for coverage up to 1,500 square feet at one air change per hour. For more frequent air cycling (about 2 ACH), it’s effectively targeted around 900 sq ft with 8-foot ceilings.

In everyday usage, the unit’s performance aligns with larger, high-capacity purifiers. It’s typically slower on particulate removal compared with high-CADR machines, but its VOC/gas results and odor removal are among the best in its category.

Noise and Day-to-Day Operation

Noise levels range from just under ~40 dB on low settings to around ~65 dB on high settings. That places it within typical conversation levels at higher speeds, and reasonably quiet for continuous use on low.

There is no air quality sensor, auto mode, sleep mode, or smart control. The control is a simple manual dial. For some users this will be a drawback; for others it reinforces the unit’s durable and straightforward approach.

Build Quality and Design

The HealthMate Plus features powder-coated steel housing and 360-degree intake grilles, giving it a solid and long-lasting feel. Casters included under the unit make repositioning easier despite its ~45-47 lb weight.

Maintenance and Filters

Filter Lifespan: Up to 3–5 years under normal residential usage.
HealthMate Plus replacement filters are more substantial and expensive than typical consumer units, but the up to 5-year life expectancy offsets long-term cost for many owners. There is no filter replacement indicator; maintenance is manual.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Very strong VOC, odor, and chemical filtration
  • True medical-grade HEPA for fine particulates
  • Long-lasting filters with extended lifespans
  • Coverage for larger rooms
  • Durable steel construction
  • 360° intake maximizes effective airflow

Cons

  • Heavy and sizable compared with tower purifiers
  • No smart features, sensors, or auto mode
  • Higher upfront and filter replacement costs
  • Manual controls only

FAQs

Does HealthMate Plus remove VOCs and chemicals?

Yes. Its deep activated carbon/zeolite filter treated with potassium iodide is specifically designed for VOC and gas capture.

Is HealthMate Plus effective for wildfire smoke?

It can capture smoke particulates through HEPA filtration, but like many high-carbon units, the airflow rate is moderate compared with high-CADR models.

Is HealthMate Plus noisy?

It’s within the normal range for large purifiers — quiet at low speeds and louder at high speeds (around 40–65 dB).

How often should filters be replaced?

Filters are designed to last up to roughly 3–5 years depending on usage and indoor air conditions.

Final Verdict

The Austin Air HealthMate Plus excels when your priority is VOC and chemical removal combined with strong particulate filtration in larger spaces. It trades modern smart features for filtration depth, durability, and long-term value. It’s often recommended for chemical sensitivities, odor concerns, and environments with elevated VOC exposure, but may be over-engineered for basic dust/allergy needs.
