The Austin Air Healthmate is effective up to 1500 sq. ft. Where the Healthmate lacks in bells and whistles, it makes up in reliable performance.

The Good

The Austin Air Healthmate is an extremely solid, all metal unit, and it is one of the few air purifier brands fully manufactured and assembled in the USA. This is also a basic unit with the only control being a simple four speed knob. We have seen old units with huge dents in them still operating without any issues.

The Bad

This is an exceptional unit for chemical, smoke, and odor removal with nearly 20 lbs. of activated carbon in its cylindrical drum filter. However, if you do not have a chemical, smoke, or strong odor concern, then this unit might be overkill. The carbon filters are expensive and are combined with the HEPA filter, so you cannot change the filters separately. In addition, the filter is difficult to change. It involves turning the unit upside down, unscrewing the bottom plate, and lifting the 20 lb. drum out of the unit. Fortunately, this only has to be done once every 2 years.

Summary

If Made in the USA and durability are important for you, go with this unit. But be sure to have a real chemical concern or you’re overpaying for benefits you don’t need.
