Our Veredict

We purchased and tested the Levoit Core® Mini Air Purifier, marketed as a compact yet powerful solution for small spaces. Its sleek design, combined with a 3-stage filtration system, promises to deliver clean and fresh air efficiently and it delivers! In our evaluation, the Levoit Core® Mini excelled in spaces up to 178 sq ft, making it perfect for personal spaces like bedrooms, offices, or nurseries. It operates quietly on the lowest setting but at the high fan setting it is a bit too loud. We were never able to get down to 20 dB as listed in their marketing. The lowest we were able to achieve is 33 dB, still very quiet. Overall, this little air purifier cleaned the air almost completely in less than two hours running on the medium setting. Our Levoit air purifier review includes a re-test after 30 days of continuous use, and while some lag in performance was noted, overall it still did a good job. Pretty impressive for $50.

Levoit Core® Mini Air Purifier: An In-Depth Review

In an era where indoor air quality is increasingly crucial, the Levoit Core® Mini Air Purifier emerges as a promising contender in the small room air purifier category. As part of Levoit’s Core series—a line known for advanced filtration technology and a range of models designed for different room sizes and needs—this air purifier aims to cater to the growing demand for efficient air purification in compact living spaces. So we took a close look at its features, benefits, and how it stands out from the competition.

The filtration system is at the heart of the Levoit Core® Mini’s performance. It employs a 3-stage process, including a pre-filter, True HEPA filter, and activated carbon filter, to tackle a wide range of airborne particles and odors. Regular filter replacement every 6 months is key to maintaining its efficiency and ensuring the air in your space remains clean and fresh. For best results and to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your device, always use genuine filters certified by Levoit.

Overall this is a solid performer. It’s a little loud on the high setting but we found it to be very efficient on the medium setting. Compared to other Levoit air purifiers, especially larger models in the Core series, the Core Mini is best suited for small rooms, while other Levoit air purifiers may offer higher capacity and additional features for larger spaces.

Features and Benefits

  • 3-Stage Filtration: Captures at least 99.97% of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, smoke, and odors.
  • Quiet Operation: Thanks to QuietKEAP™ Technology, the air purifier’s noise level is as low as 25dB, making it one of the quietest air purifiers available. This low noise level is ideal for night use in bedrooms or other quiet spaces.
  • Aromatherapy: Add essential oils to the purifier to create a more pleasant environment.
  • Compact and Portable: Easily move it from room to room, perfect for small living spaces.
  • Energy Efficiency: Energy Star certification means it’s designed to be energy-efficient, reducing your carbon footprint and electricity bills. The sleep mode feature further helps minimize energy consumption by operating in a low-power state when needed.

I never knew what a small little thing could change my life. Not overstating just being honest.

Our Experience Testing the Levoit Core® Mini

We began testing by burning an incense stick for about 10 minutes and measuring the change in air quality with an air (AQM) in a room approximately 200 sq ft.  The baseline air quality reading is typically 2 or 3. We then ran the air purifier and took new AQM readings after 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and finally 2 hours. We also measured the noise levels with a decibel reader, the fan speed with an anemometer to help determine the CFM, and used an energy meter to measure the power consumption of the unit. Each of these metrics help us determine the overall performance of an air purifier.

Initial Performance Testing

We began testing when the air quality monitor (AQM) reached a steady threshold reading of 139. Our normal baseline for our indoor air quality is 2 or 3**.** At the 139 reading we ran the Levoit Core Mini on Medium for 10 minutes and the air quality reading dropped to 82.  After thirty minutes of running, the air quality reading had dropped to 51. Within an hour the air quality reading had dropped to 19 and after 2 hours of testing the air quality reading had reached 8 – basically a normal reading.  The overall lingering smell from the incense was almost totally gone.  This demonstrates the delivery of purified air, significantly improving indoor air quality.

This is an impressive result. For a small air purifier to fully clean the air in under 2 hours while only running on medium shows us that the Levoit Core Mini is a powerful and effective air purifier for small rooms. It effectively removes airborne contaminants such as fine dust, smoke particles, allergens, and odors, resulting in cleaner and healthier air.

30-Day Performance Re-Test

After running the Levoit Core Mini consistently for 30 days, we pulled it apart and re-tested it. We began testing when the air quality monitor (AQM) reached a steady threshold reading of 284. Our normal baseline for our indoor air quality is 2 or 3. At the 284 reading we ran the Levoit Core Mini on Medium for 10 minutes and the air quality reading dropped to 174. This is a 48% improvement in air quality in 10 minutes. When the air purifier was tested on the first run, it provided a 51% improvement in air quality in 10 minutes.

After thirty minutes of running, the air purifier improved the air quality by 77%. Compare that to the original test when it was first run, it provided 92% improvement in air quality. **After 1 hour of testing,**we saw a 112% improvement, compared to the initial testing which provided 151% improvement. We also noted that the air filter had collected a good amount of material, including large particles such as dust, pet hair, and lint, but was not fully clogged.

While the performance of the Levoit Core Mini starts to lag a bit after 30 days of constant use, it is still a strong performer. We recommend taking the Levoit Core Mini filter out once a month and lightly tapping it to clear out some of the collected material. Be careful not to damage the filter. For best results, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing the Levoit Core Mini filter, which include removing the bottom cover, taking out the old filter, inserting a new one, and resetting the filter indicator if needed. Doing this can help maintain the performance and extend the life of the filter.

Noise

The standout feature during our testing was the purifier’s quiet operation on the lowest setting – 34 dB. We were never able to achieve the 20 dB level that Levoit advertises in their marketing and packaging. However, it’s so quiet on the low setting that it’s easy to forget it’s running, making it ideal for bedrooms or study areas where noise could be a distraction. On the medium setting it jumped up to 45 dB – loud enough to hear it running but not distracting. On the highest setting it created almost 52 dB of noise. This is loud enough for it to be distracting. Our recommendation is to run this on high when you’re not in the room, and then turn it down to medium or low when you’re in the same room.

For context, here are some noise level comparisons with other compact air purifiers:

Fan Speed on Levoit Core Mini

We also measured the fan speed at each setting to help determine the CFM. This is essentially how effectively the air purifier is able to move air which translates to overall efficiency.

On the lowest setting the Levoit Core Mini fan speed registered 177 ft/min. For context, a typical small space heater fan moves air at about 256 ft/min. So the low setting is quiet, but perhaps not as effective.

On the medium setting the Levoit Core Mini fan speed registered 433 ft/min. This shows that on the medium setting the Levoit Core Mini fan is really moving a lot of air. And when you combine that with the tolerable noise levels, then this is likely the most effective and efficient setting for most people.

On the high fan setting the Levoit Core Mini fan speed registered at 630 ft/min. Again, this is a powerful fan but noisy. However, it’s important to note that due to its airflow limitations, the Levoit Core Mini is not suitable for a large room or large space. It is best used in smaller areas, as it does not have the capacity to effectively clean or circulate air in bigger rooms. We recommend running this air purifier on high when you’re not in the room to help clean the air, and then switch to a low or medium setting while you’re sleeping or working next to it.
