Our Veredict

We tested the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier and found it to be a solid performer in the small-space & under $50 category. It’s not the best performer but it will do the job. The Megawise has to run on a higher fan speed with lower performance outcome compared to others in this category. The fan at turbo speed is pretty loud, 57dB. The Megawise Desktop Air Purifier wins in cost – it has a lower lifetime cost compared to other air purifiers in this category.

In our evaluation, the Megawise purifier proved to be a fair performer in its category. It’s designed to be portable, making it ideal for bedrooms, offices, or even nurseries. Here’s what we found out.

In the competitive category of small air purifiers under $50, the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier is a compact and stylish option. We took a closer look at its noise, fan speed, design, and overall value to see how it performs and compares to other air purifiers in the market. The heart of the Megawise purifier’s performance is its 3-stage filter which includes a pre-filter, a true HEPA filter, and a carbon filter, which effectively captures a wide range of airborne pollutants and help remove odors.

In general, compact air purifiers—including most desktop models—will be less effective at removing pollutants. They perform optimally in smaller spaces.1

Our Experience Testing the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier

We tested the Megawise purifier in a 200 sq ft room to evaluate its effectiveness in improving air quality. Starting with a baseline air quality index of moderate pollution as noted in EPA guidelines, we observed a significant improvement within just an hour of operation on the medium setting.

Performance

The Megawise purifier performed similarly to other models in this category. Its performance in a small room was satisfactory.

We started with a steady 140 AQI and ran the air purifier on turbo for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes of running, the AQI registered at 83. After running the air purifier on turbo for 30 mins, the AQI has dropped to 52.  After an hour AQI is at 40, and after 2 hours the AQI is at 15. Avg baseline AQI is around 2 or 3.  The air purifier performance seemed to slow down after two hours.

It cleaned the air at a similar rate to the Levoit Core Mini but the Megawise Desktop had to run on a higher fan speed and was much louder.

Noise

One of the standout features of the Megawise purifier is its quiet operation. On its lowest setting it is barely audible, but that is because the fan speed it so low that it didn’t even register on our meter.  The lowest setting registered at 35 dB. At the medium setting it produced 45.5 dB of noise. On high it created 51.5 dB of noise. And the turbo setting produced 57 dB of noise – quite loud and potentially distracting.

35 dB on low fan setting
45.5 dB on medium fan
51.5 dB on high fan setting
56.9 dB on turbo fan

Fan Speed

On its lowest setting the Megawise Desktop Air Purifer is barely audible, but it is basically useless because the fan speed is so low it isn’t moving any air. In our tests, the low setting on the fan didn’t register on our meter. We tested this multiple times to be sure and with each test the lowest fan setting would never register a fan speed. The medium setting fan speed came in at 78.8 ft/min. The high fan setting registered at 177.3 ft/min and the turbo setting registered at 315.2 ft/min. This means that to effectively clean the air you should run it on high or turbo. The downside is that the fan is quite loud at these speeds.

0 ft/min on low fan setting
78.85 ft/min on medium
177.3 ft/min on high
315 ft/min on turbo fan

Overview of Megawise Desktop Air Purifier Filters

The effectiveness of the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier largely comes down to its True HEPA filter, capable of capturing particles as small as 0.3 microns. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, this level of filtration is essential for removing common allergens, dust, and other pollutants from the air. The 3-step filtration combines a pre-filter with True HEPA and a Carbon filter to help clean the air and remove odors.

Key Filter Features

  • Easy Replacement: Filters are designed for easy replacement, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Affordable Maintenance: Replacement filters are reasonably priced at $12.99, contributing to the purifier’s overall value.

Total Lifetime Cost of Megawise Desktop Air Purifier

Considering the purifier’s price at $49.99 and the cost of filter replacements at $12.99 every six months, then over five years, the total 5-year cost is remarkably affordable at $179.99. This makes the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier a good investment for those seeking to improve their indoor air quality without breaking the bank.

How to Use the Megawise Desktop Air Purifier

Using the Megawise purifier is straightforward. Simply plug it in, hit the top power button to adjust the fan’s speed and it begins purifying the air with its efficient filtration system. The optional night light can be turned on or off, depending on your preference.

Final Verdict

The Megawise Desktop Air Purifier is a good choice for anyone looking to improve the air quality in small spaces. It’s not as efficient or quiet as some of the other air purifiers in this category, but it is less expensive over 5 years.
